SINGING VOICE REHABILITATION: A GUIDE FOR THE VOICE TEACHER AND SLP
ISBN#9781435438545
AVAILABLE APPROX. SEPT. 2009 FROM DELMAR/CENGAGE PUBLISHING
By Dr. Karen Wicklund
The purpose of this text is two-fold: first, to provide voice teachers and SLPs with an easily accessible and user-friendly guide to the workings of the vocal mechanism and processes of singing voice rehabilitation; and second, to encourage all voice teachers (when the opportunity arises) to have the courage to undertake the voice rehabilitation of their students with as much vigor as they do their students voice building. Though successful singing voice rehabilitation skills take time and experience to develop, the teacher that is able to rehabilitate injured singers will find much satisfaction in helping both long-standing and new students alike.
SYNOPSIS
Though there are voice disorders texts written by and for speech-language pathologists, and vocal pedagogy texts written for singing teachers, there is not yet one text that deals exclusively with therapeutic singing techniques. SINGING VOICE REHABILITATION helps singing teachers and SLPs gain skills in designing and implementing singing and speaking voice therapy protocols for their clients. This text also defines and delineates the scope of practice of each member of the voice team; M.D., SLP and singing voice teacher, so that team members will be able to complement, rather than duplicate therapy services for their singers. Other topics included in this text are: normal voice function; types of vocal injuries and their effect on the singing voice; vocal outcome tracks for singers; case studies; therapeutic singing voice exercises and song repertoire in classical and non-classical styles; special considerations for the vocally injured student singer; and vocal hygiene recommendations for preventing re-injury.
